Time to separate Church and State
It was not just in Ireland that priests abused children. Pope Francis is travelling to Canada this week to apologise for how the Catholic Church treated indigenous children. For over a hundred years, the Canadian government forcibly took 150,000 indigenous children from their parents and locked them away in special residential schools, mainly run by the Catholic Church. The aim was to ‘civilise’ them and destroy their native culture. The children were treated terribly, suffering malnutrition and sexual abuse. Hundreds were buried in unmarked graves, just like in Tuam. The last Pope Benedict refused to apologise and Francis is only making this belated apology after 1,000 unmarked graves have been found. The apology ritual is not enough – we need to get the priests out of schools in Canada , Ireland and everywhere. Time to separate Church and State.

Uber Lobbying Fine Gael!
The revelations about Uber’s lobbying activities show how the Irish state really operates. Officially, we live in a democracy where we all have an equal say. In reality, those with money get to shape policy behind the scenes. Uber wanted to de-regulate the taxi industry so that anyone can be a taxi driver. So they hired John Moran as a lobbyist. Moran is a former Secretary-General in the Department of Finance, appointed by the Fine Gael Minister Michael Noonan. Story: https://www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/ourview/arid-40916762.html

FRONTLINE WORKERS DESERVE MORE THAN THIS
The government’s offer to public sector workers is an insult. The previous two-year public sector deal called ‘Building Momentum’ gave all public sector workers a 1% increase in 2021 and gives another 1% in 2022. But inflation was 2.15% in 2021, and it’s 7.8% in 2022. So workers are down 8%. In the proposed new two-year deal, the government has offered 2.5% and then 2.5% for next year when inflation will be at least 5%. Accepting this insulting offer would be accepting a pay cut.
